A statement on Facebook by California State University, Long Beach, said Gonzalez was an enrolled there and was attending Strate College of Design in Paris during a semester abroad.

The university provided no additional details on where or how Gonzalez was killed other than to say she died "during the attacks in and around Paris." The California school was planning a vigil to mourn Gonzalez for 4 p.m. Sunday.

"I'm deeply saddened by the news of the passing of ... Gonzalez," said university president Jane Close Conoley Saturday. "Our university stands with our nearly eighty foreign exchange students from France as they struggle with this tragedy."

Dominique Sciamma, director of Strate College of Design in Paris, also issued a statement on Facebook. "I had hoped with all my heart that no one from our community would be affected by these criminal acts. Unfortunately this was not the case."

Sciamma said other students from the Paris design school had been hurt, "but are now out of danger."
